Coughlins eager to return to E-Town
5-14-98

by Scott Woodruff

The Jeg's Mail Order Racing Team has been extremely busy over the past two weeks. The team took on the task of breaking down both the Troy's #8 car and Jeg's #25 car completely to look for potential inconsistency in their set-ups.

Jeg Coughlin, Sr., the team advisor and founder of Jeg's Automotive, said, "There comes a time when it's best to start from ground zero. Both cars were thoroughly inspected and all possible problem areas were replaced with new components, even all of the wires were replaced in both cars. These tasks take up valuable time, but we feel extremely confident that the time was well spent."

Troy Coughlin
The Jeg's Team took the #8 and #25 cars, along with a new Oldsmobile Cutlass to National Trail Raceway to test this past Monday to get a better handle on the cars, and to determine if the new car would replace Troy's #8 Cutlass, which he has run since the beginning of the season. The new car performed so well that the decision to run it at the Mopar Parts Nationals was made after just two passes down the track.

"I am excited about driving our team's new Oldsmobile Cutlass," said Troy, who last year at the Mopar Parts Nationals turned his Pro Stock Pontiac Firebird over on its roof near the finish line. "I feel like it's a new beginning for my season and I can think of no other track that I want to prove it at. This year has been filled with stressful situations and bad luck, being in this car feels so comfortable. I really feel at ease behind the wheel, the comfort level in this car is unmatched. The car performed flawless during testing; it made the decision to drive the new car much easier for our team and me. My goal is to take this car right to the top, our entire team has worked so hard to make this car race ready. I look forward to seeing the smiles on everyone face after this weekend." Troy can break back into the top 10 with a good showing at the Mopar Parts Nationals.

Jeg Coughlin Jr.
Jeg's testing with the #25 car was the team's most tangible test session of the year. The car had consistently made it to the 60-foot clock in the 1.06-second range most of the year, but recent discoveries improved the overall performance level of the #25 Jeg's Mail Order Cutlass to the 1.02-second range.

The Mopar Parts Nationals will mark the first race this season that Jeg Jr. will be behind the wheel of two cars. He will campaign the Jeg's Mail Order colors in Super Stock and Pro Stock.

"Last year I won this event in Super Gas," said Jeg Jr., the first driver in NHRA history to win national events in four separate competition classes (Pro Stock, Comp, Super Stock, and Super Gas) in a single season. "There is no better feeling to me then being in the seat of a racecar. Last year I drove two cars at almost every event I entered. I simply love to compete. Driving both cars this weekend will be a challenge, but it's one that I am really looking forward to. Having such a talented team behind me makes this challenge a lot easier."

Jeg also will be racing in the 1998 Federal-Mogul AllStars race at the Pontiac Excitement Nationals in Super Stock. He qualified to compete in that race after winning the event as the 1997 Division 3 representative in Super Stock. Competing in Super Stock this weekend will help him have a better handle on the car for the 1998 Federal-Mogul All Star Race.
