PRO STOCK

Friday's 1st Session

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run.:

Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 7.043/196.03 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Adam Landolfi Runs 7.148/194.72 Psn # 2

      3:02 PM ...
Landolfi is in his beautiful ex-Greg Thomas Firebird again this
weekend...

Left Lane: Jim Ray Runs 7.175/193.75 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Jr. Runs 11.064/ 80.36 Psn # 4

Patrick bought Glidden's cars, but this isn't one of
them... this is the Haas-built Probe that he ran just a few
times last year, with one of Glidden's motors under the hood.

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.970/197.06 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.020/196.24 Psn # 2

There's a career-best for Martino, the corrected altitude
just under 1000' now, with a 66 degree temp, under mostly
cloudy skies...

Left Lane: Billy Huff Runs 7.074/194.38 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 8.160/122.53 Psn # 7

Huff again tested at Darlington last week... so what's new.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.984/197.80 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Jerry Eckman Runs 7.169/188.08 Psn # 7

Looks like the Schmidt-powered cars are going to be
strong this weekend... nice one by Krisher.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.010/197.32 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.995/196.03 Psn # 3

Nice job by Rickie in the Kight Firebird... had a 1.055
in 60', that's respectable. Morgan is still in his 'old' car
this weekend, the new machine staying home.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.972/197.45 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.951/197.97 Psn # 1

That makes five cars in the sixes, already...

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.990/197.19 Psn # 5
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.000/196.89 Psn # 7

Alderman gets the 'good' engine this weekend... and it
shows.

Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.951/198.19 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.079/195.69 Psn #13

Yep, those Schmidt cars are plenty quick... and there are
a few sprinkles here, so we're going to be on hold for a
minute. Pawuk and WJ had completed their burnouts, but only
Pawuk opted to run when it stopped, just a few minutes later...

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.964/197.75 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Warren Johnson No Time Psn #20

So Johnson will allow his car to cool... and run later in
the session.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.992/196.12 Psn # 8
Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.062/194.55 Psn #14

Now nine cars in the sixes, and the bump spot is Franks'
7.079...

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.946/198.28 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.017/196.76 Psn #13

More sprinkles here, so light we can't see it but
apparently it's coming down a little harder on the top end...
so we wait, at 3:21 PM... just 2 minutes pass and they fire
'em back up, and we're back in bidness. And KJ takes over the
pole position...

Left Lane: Pete Williams Runs 7.001/196.63 Psn #12
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.066/195.43 Psn #18

These two both had 1.047' 60' times, but were definitely
not equal downtrack...

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.158/196.16 Psn #23
Right Lane: Terry Adams Runs 7.003/196.07 Psn #13

Geoffrion had a bad 60', then was all over the lane for
the first couple hundred feet...

Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 10.878/ 81.15 Psn #28
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.112/194.46 Psn #22

Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 8.633/111.55 Psn #29
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.941/199.07 Psn # 1

     Coffman had a 1.036 in 60' while Johnson had a 1.058...
but you see what happened downtrack... that's all of 'em, with
WJ on the top and Mike Edwards' 7.017 on the bubble... 3:34PM.

PRO STOCK

Friday's 2nd Session

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run.:

Left Lane: Jerry Eckman Runs 6.945/197.32 Now # 2
Best prior run: 7.169/188.08 Was #26
Right Lane: Billy Huff Runs 6.991/196.24 Now #11
Best prior run: 7.074/194.38 Was #21

7:18 PM and I couldn't find anyone in the lanes that
doesn't think we'll have the first all-six-second field after
tonight's session, and about half of 'em think that we'll see
the first 200mph pass tonite. We're at about 600' corrected
altitude, _but_ there's 59% humidity... WJ says it won't
happen, FWIW.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.984/196.03 Now #10
Best prior run: 6.995/196.03 Was #13
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.017/197.28 Now # 9
                       Best prior run: 6.984/197.80 Was # 9

Bump spot is Terry Adams' 7.003, by the way...

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.892/129.31 Now # 5
                       Best prior run: 6.951/197.97 Was # 5
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.970/197.32 Now # 7
Best prior run: 7.010/197.32 Was #17

Now when have you last seen Yates abort a run... not
often, that's for sure. He had a great 1.028 in 60', that may
be the answer... too much clutch too soon.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.961/197.75 Now # 7
Best prior run: 7.000/196.89 Was #15
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.937/198.32 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 6.972/197.45 Was # 9

Yates and Marnell tested a bunch after Atlanta,
exchanging drivetrain parts to isolate the problems Marnell
has been having... he had a great 1.031 in 60' here, and you
see the result.

Left Lane: Ray Franks Runs 6.987/197.28 Now #13
Best prior run: 7.079/195.69 Was #23
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.018/196.89 Now #14
Best prior run: 6.990/197.19 Was #13

That's it folks, we're over the hump... this is now the
first-ever all-six-second Pro Stock field... officially.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.894/200.13 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 6.941/199.07 Was # 2
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.932/198.50 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 6.951/198.19 Was # 5

Yep, you read it right, it's a historic night, as the
first ever sub-6.9 second pass, along side the first ever
200mph at a NHRA event... Schmidt had a better 60' time and
got the win light, but it's the GM Performance Parts Firebird
that gets all the accolades here today.... it's 7:28 PM,
for the record.

     It's a $40K night for WJ, as he'll take home $25,000 for
the first into the Speed-Pro 200-mph Pro Stock Club, and $15,000
from the MBNA folks for the new national record... the 6.894 was
backed up by his earlier pass.

  Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 15.078/ 55.26 Now #22
Best prior run: 7.062/194.55 Was #22
Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.952/198.36 Now # 7
                       Best prior run: 6.964/197.75 Was # 8

Gaines gets out of shape and clicks it...

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.984/197.10 Now #12
Best prior run: 7.017/196.76 Was #19
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 9.910/ 92.12 Now #17
Best prior run: 6.992/196.12 Was #16

Allen had a impressive start, but the car went left and
he had to lift before the 330' mark...

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 11.663/ 74.80 Now #23
Best prior run: 7.066/195.43 Was #23
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.898/199.20 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 6.946/198.28 Was # 5

Kurt just misses 200, but gets into the eighties like
Dad...

Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 6.968/196.76 Now #10
Best prior run: 7.003/196.07 Was #19
Right Lane: Pete Williams Runs 6.963/197.41 Now # 9
Best prior run: 7.001/196.63 Was #18

Bump spot is all the way down to 6.987... can you imagine
coming here, running a six, and not making the field?? That's
where Alderman, Huff, and Allen are right now.

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.071/195.48 Now #25
Best prior run: 7.112/194.46 Was #24
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 6.986/197.28 Now #16
Best prior run: 7.158/196.16 Was #26

Johnson said he blew the tires off in the first round,
and it didn't look any better here... meanwhile Scott jumps up
and grabs the edge.

Left Lane: Adam Landolfi Runs 7.338/185.98 Now #27
Best prior run: 7.148/194.72 Was #26
Right Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.015/195.86 Now #21
                       Best prior run: 10.878/ 81.15 Was #30

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Jr. Runs 7.058/196.46 Now #25
                       Best prior run: 11.064/ 80.36 Was #31
Right Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 7.030/195.77 Now #23
Best prior run: 8.633/111.55 Was #30

Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.763/131.94 Now #23
Best prior run: 7.020/196.24 Was #22
Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 7.000/196.85 Now #21
Best prior run: 7.043/196.03 Was #24

Cambron joins the Wallbanger Club here, something going
away under the hood and whatever fluid it was got under the
the rear tires and turned him sideways. The left rear of
the car slaps the wall at about the 800' mark, but Dester does
a great job getting it back under control. He pulls the chute
and stops out on the track, where after sitting there for a
minute a fire erupts. The Safari is on the scene immediately
and puts the fire out, and then resumes their track cleanup...
7:48 PM and we're waiting and watching.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 15.297/ 53.93 Now #31
Best prior run: 8.160/122.53 Was #31
Right Lane: Jim Ray Runs 10.494/ 74.26 Now #30
Best prior run: 7.175/193.75 Was #30

Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.957/197.80 Now # 8
Best prior run: 6.970/197.06 Was #12

     A great 1.020 in 60' translates to another career-best
for the Mama Rosa's Firebird... and we're done... 8:01 PM

PRO STOCK

Saturday's 3rd Session

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run.:

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.993/197.84 Now # 4
                       Best prior run: 6.937/198.32 Was # 4

12:16 PM and the consensus in the staging lanes is that
the air is about 200' _better_ than last night... there's less
humidity, higher barometer (30.28"), and it's warmer (64 degrees).
The only unknown is the track condition... remember, it had a
full day of racing on it yesterday.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.985/198.01 Now #16
Best prior run: 6.990/197.19 Was #18
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.934/199.51 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 6.894/200.13 Was # 1

Darrell gets in the show, but he bumps his teammate, Scott
Geoffrion. And if Scott gets back in later, he bumps Darrell
back out...

Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.978/197.84 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 6.932/198.50 Was # 3

Allen jumps right up into the middle of the pack, and now
there are no Dodges left in the show...

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.927/198.85 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 6.898/199.20 Was # 2

Best prior run: 7.071/195.48 Was #28

Maskin told me that he will be working closely with Pete
at least thru Dallas, but that he will still be supplying his
engines and expertise to the Humphrey/Bell team also... looks
like things are starting to turn around here for Pete.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.130/196.24 Now #18

That's _not_ what the Eicke camp was looking for...

Best prior run: 7.058/196.46 Was #28

Rusty Glidden and a very happy Patrick family are high-
fiving it on the starting line, as Robert makes the toughest
Pro Stock show in history ... for now.

Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 9.471/ 98.11 Now #29
Best prior run: 7.030/195.77 Was #28
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.983/ 0.00 Now #14
Best prior run: 8.160/122.53 Was #31

So Thomas gets in as well, bumping Edwards... Patrick
bumped Larry Morgan, by the way...

Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.982/197.15 Now #14
Best prior run: 7.000/196.85 Was #23

Bell moves into the show and bumps Patrick, making his
happiness short-lived..

Left Lane: Jim Ray Runs 7.093/195.48 Now #31
Best prior run: 7.175/193.75 Was #31
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.989/196.63 Now #19
Best prior run: 6.984/196.03 Was #19

     No joy here...

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 6.982/197.75 Now # 9
                       Best prior run: 6.957/197.80 Was # 9
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.940/198.45 Now # 5
                       Best prior run: 6.951/197.97 Was # 6

Bump spot is down to Thomas' 6.984... Yates broke a lifter
last night, destroying his best ex-Maskin engine, so they have a
Ingles motor in today, the one they ran at Rockingham... And he
improves with it, tieing his career best ET...

Left Lane: Billy Huff Runs 7.000/196.33 Now #23
Best prior run: 6.991/196.24 Was #23
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 9.105/105.34 Now #10
Best prior run: 6.961/197.75 Was #10

Coughlin wasn't out of shape, but he may have been shaking
the tires... it's tough for us to see from this vantage, with
the crowd that accumulates on the starting line.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 6.986/198.01 Now #16
Best prior run: 6.984/197.80 Was #16

A couple of left-lane singles to finish off the round...

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.979/197.41 Now #13
Best prior run: 6.970/197.32 Was #13

And that's it for the round, with WJ firmly atop the field
and Ron Krisher's 6.984 on the bubble... 12:41 PM

                       Best prior run: 6.955/197.23 Was # 8

Williams runs nearly 199mph... looks like Maskin has taken
the throttle stop off...

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 6.988/196.76 Now #15
Best prior run: 6.983/197.49 Was #15

Best prior run: 6.986/197.28 Was #21

Scott says that if he makes a perfect pass, he can run
6.99... that wasn't perfect.

Left Lane: Jerry Eckman Runs 6.996/197.15 Now # 7
                       Best prior run: 6.945/197.32 Was # 7

Best prior run: 7.015/195.86 Was #26

Eckman came here with just one engine, after hurting his
other one at Atlanta... he lost oil pressure on Friday and since
then he's been running one borrowed from Mike Thomas... and he's
well pleased with it.

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.003/196.42 Now #19
Best prior run: 6.984/196.03 Was #19

Best prior run: 7.030/195.77 Was #29

Coffman's Firebird looked really good off the line here,
and he ran his best ever and still comes up short...

Best prior run: 6.982/197.15 Was #14

Yates is grinnin' like a new Papa after running quick with
the Ingles motor this morning... and now he does it again.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 10.191/ 89.03 Now #10
Best prior run: 6.961/197.75 Was #10
Right Lane: Jim Ray No Time Now #31
Best prior run: 7.093/195.48 Was #31

Coughlin's Firebird turns hard left and he's forced to
abort... I missed Ray's time, the monitor cleared too quickly.

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.939/199.77 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 6.894/200.13 Was # 1

Best prior run: 6.991/196.24 Was #24

Almost 200mph, in the heat of the afternoon... Sheesh.
They don't call him The Professor for nuttin'...

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.040/196.37 Now #26

Best prior run: 6.985/198.01 Was #20

Scott thought that Darrell might have a shot at making the
show, provided he made a perfect run... and that's just what he
did, plenty quick at every interval. So that bumps Krisher, and
moves Thomas down to face WJ in the first round.... there's
just one car left to run today.

Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.959/199.29 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 6.932/198.50 Was # 3

The final car... and it's some great speed from the Schmidt
machine. 5:11 PM and the quickest and fastest field in history
is set.

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 1st Round

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jerry Eckman 0.435 6.945 198.36
 (L) Pete Williams 0.529 7.004 197.19

2:32 PM and we roll into Pro Stock, after a very
eventful round of Funny Car... the staging lane weather
pundits say conditions are very close to the Saturday
morning qualifying session, except there's more humidity
today. Here, Eckman got a big jump on Williams, who's
still having problems getting his clutch linkage sorted
out...

 (W) Darrell Alderman 0.462 6.969 198.10
 (L) Terry Adams 0.498 7.006 196.33

It's been a while since the Mopar fans had something
to cheer about, but they got it here...

 (W) Kurt Johnson 0.442 6.926 197.88
 (L) Mike Bell 0.419 6.958 197.75

Bell did all he could off the line, but Kurt ran him
down... winning margin was just 0.009 secs, or about two
and a half feet.

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.494 6.883 200.53
 (L) Mike Thomas 0.492 6.970 197.36

Thomas was even with WJ out of the gate, and that's
not good news for him... and WJ makes the quickest and
fastest run ever, to lower the national records even
more... wow.

 (W) Steve Schmidt 0.449 6.945 198.80
 (L) Rickie Smith 0.432 6.963 197.88

How many times have you seen a Pro Stock run 6.96/198
and lose??... that's what happened here, as Schmidt wins
this one by just 0.001 secs., or 3 inches

 (W) Bruce Allen 0.447 6.930 197.75
 (L) George Marnell 0.476 6.926 197.80

Allen collects the Slick 50 holeshot dollars, when his
quickest and fastest run ever wouldn't have been enough to
win if he hadn't gotten the holeshot... incredible round.

 (W) Mark Pawuk 0.461 6.935 198.85
 (L) Tom Martino 0.463 6.962 198.01

Martino makes his fastest ever here, but it's not
enough to take out Pawuk... the Summit guys are doing a
great job this weekend.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.429 6.959 197.54
 (L) Troy Coughlin 0.451 6.940 198.50

And we end the round with yet another nail-biter, the
Winston Champ needing a holeshot to take this win over
Coughlin... awesome racing, you oughta be here!!... 2:46 PM

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 2nd Round

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jim Yates 0.418 7.000 196.54
 (L) Steve Schmidt 0.140(R) 7.007 196.33

1:54 PM and Schmidt leaves WAY early, giving this one
 away...

 (W) Darrell Alderman 0.433 6.990 196.03
 (L) Bruce Allen 0.453 7.905 127.53

Allen gave up at about 1000'...

 (W) Kurt Johnson 0.442 7.005 196.67
 (L) Mark Pawuk 0.486 8.493 109.19

Couldn't see why, but Pawuk slowed at halftrack...

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.577 6.980 198.45
 (L) Jerry Eckman (Broke)

WJ had a lackluster 1.057 in 60', and still was the
quickest of the round... Eckman didn't make the trip back.
He'll race the Dodge next time. 1:59 PM and that's all
of 'em.

   (R) = Red light foul

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 3rd Round

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Kurt Johnson 0.441 6.969 197.19
 (L) Jim Yates 0.452 7.051 193.75

3:45 PM and I predict (while I'm on a roll) that this
one will come down to the reaction times... well, not
quite, the red Pontiac slowing and KJ didn't need his
starting line advantage, after all... margin was 0.093
secs, 26 feet... a lot, by Pro Stock standards...

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.466 6.939 198.23
 (L) Darrell Alderman 0.434 6.992 195.69

WJ switched lanes after watching the last two run...
And neither car wanted to light their last yellow, but when
WJ finally rolled in Alderman followed quickly... and the
Dodge gets the holeshot, but it's not enough... margin here
was 0.021 secs, about 6 feet.

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 4th Round

DINWIDDIE, VA - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Pro Stock at the 3rd Annual Pennzoil Nationals Presented By Trak Auto:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.493 6.959 198.36
 (L) Kurt Johnson 0.487 8.498 113.80

Kurt beat Dad the last time they met, at Atlanta, but
Warren beat the kid the last time they were in the final,
at the Winternationals last year... And they're basically
even off the line, then Kurt gets out of the groove at
half-track and The Old Man (as Kurt calls him) cruises to a
victory... he's undefeated at this track, winning all three
races here!
