Friday's 1st Session Notes
GAINESVILLE, FL - RIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 28th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run.: Left Lane: Jack Ostrander Runs 5.445/193.46, Psn # 1 Right Lane: Rhonda Hartman Runs 14.236/ 66.53, Psn # 2 12:16 AM, and we see the first two unlimited nitro machines of the weekend... Hartman was loaded for bear, too much wheelspeed right off the line. And it looks like there's oil in the left lane, the Safari trucks take to the track, starting the oildry application at just past the halfway mark... Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 11.091/ 77.40, Psn # 2 Right Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 11.843/ 77.51, Psn # 3 TJjr may have a full-year deal in the works, the car sponsored by 'Demand Flow Racing' this weekend, a deal put together by John Costanza, some-time alcohol racer and full-time entrepreneur. Left Lane: Mike Smith Runs 5.902/140.36, Psn # 3 Right Lane: Shelly Anderson Runs 4.710/309.81, Psn # 1 Smith's engine goes silent in a flash of flame at just past halfback... while Anderson just motors right on down the right lane, quick enough to take the early lead. Left Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 9.560/ 84.88, Psn # 5 Right Lane: Marshall Topping Runs 8.712/ 82.85, Psn # 4 The Bud King rolls out to a big ovation by these Florida fans... and he's up in smoke, just like Topping. Left Lane: Connie Kalitta Runs 4.754/299.70, Psn # 2 Right Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 5.004/269.70, Psn # 3 Dan Olson has signed on with Eddie Hill as an 'advisor' for the next two races... Bill Shacklett is listed as the official crew chief, but Eddie still makes the tuning decisions. Left Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 4.704/301.20, Psn # 1 Right Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 7.491/104.98, Psn # 7 Nice smooth one by the young Schumacher; prolly won't hold up for #1, but solidly in the show, fersure. Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.811/294.98, Psn # 5 Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.749/304.36, Psn # 3 Vandergriff took a couple of days off and spent some time earlier this week with the local Marine fighter squadron, including injection seat training, water survival training, all so he could get in some jet time... went 60-70 miles out over the Atlantic, reaching speeds of Mach 1.4 in an F-18... neato! Nice baseline runs for both teams, here. Head's been disappointed with his start this year, this should boost his spirits. Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 4.838/303.33, Psn # 7 Right Lane: Joe Amato Runs 4.652/313.80, Psn # 1 That Amato crowd is doing a heckuva job these days, putting a big number on the board when a lot of the others are still tiptoeing around... Left Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 11.329/ 71.43, Psn #16 Right Lane: Larry Dixon, Jr. Runs 9.536/ 86.03, Psn #13 Too much too soon, here, as both teams are too aggressive for the track... Left Lane: Cristen Powell Runs 4.815/290.79, Psn # 7 Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 7.143/109.58, Psn #13 Cory Mac felt it start to spin, pedalled once, but couldn't save it... Left Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 10.446/ 80.63, Psn #17 Scott falls to the same problems that many before him have... the smokes and the shakes. Left Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 4.740/306.85, Psn # 4 The final car of the round, here... and it's a nice one. 12:54 PM and we're over to the floppers... -- Ed Dykes / Racing Information Systems![]()

Friday's 2nd Session Notes
GAINESVILLE, FL - RIS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 28th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, (best prior elapsed time/speed), position in order following run, & (position in order prior to run): Left Lane: Shelly Anderson Runs 4.792/297.52 ( 4.710/309.81) Now # 3 (# 3) Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.713/309.27 ( 9.560/ 84.88) Now # 4 (#17) 4:49 PM ... Looks like the King backed it down to a safe level, running 'only' a tame '.71, at 'only' 309... yeah, right. Left Lane: Marshall Topping Runs 4.972/280.19 ( 8.712/ 82.85) Now #11 (#16) Right Lane: Connie Kalitta Runs 14.278/ 62.64 ( 4.754/299.70) Now # 7 (# 7) Connie raises a huge cloud of tire smoke off the line... just because he can, I guess. Meanwhile, Topping motors the Mitchell machine off the bubble, sliding Doug Herbert down onto that perilous spot. Left Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 10.611/ 68.09 ( 5.004/269.70) Now #12 (#12) Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 6.317/128.07 ( 4.704/301.20) Now # 2 (# 2) Not to either driver's liking, here... Left Lane: Doug Herbert Runs 10.202/ 83.30 ( 7.491/104.98) Now #16 (#16) Right Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.727/300.90 ( 4.811/294.98) Now # 5 (# 8) And a cheer goes up from the Jerzees suite next door, as Bob the Fighter Jock moves up the food chain... no joy for the Herbert machine, tho. Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 7.024/114.57 ( 4.749/304.36) Now # 7 (# 7) Right Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 4.750/309.59 ( 4.838/303.33) Now # 8 (#10) More shuffle here, Sarver moving up to where he'll have lane choice Sunday, if he stays where he is... Head is too greedy... Left Lane: Joe Amato Runs 4.621/313.15 ( 4.652/313.80) Now # 1 (# 1) Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 5.024/237.21 (11.329/ 71.43) Now #13 (#20) Amato ups the ante, lowering the pole position mark even lower... and Scelzi makes the show, bumping Herbert. Left Lane: Larry Dixon, Jr. Runs 5.032/258.02 ( 9.536/ 86.03) Now #14 (#18) Right Lane: Cristen Powell Runs 12.897/ 69.95 ( 4.815/290.79) Now #10 (#10) New bump spot is 7.143; that's all Dixon needs here... and he gets it, with room to spare. Left Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.711/304.05 ( 7.143/109.58) Now # 4 (#17) Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.836/272.23 (10.446/ 80.63) Now #12 (#19) New bump spot is 5.902, as Dixon's pass bumps Cory Mac... but wait, the McDonald's machine leaping back into the fray with a stunning... oops, sorry, I thought I was a real writer for a second there. Anyway, Cory Mac makes the show, and bumps Ostrander in the process, setting the bump at Larry Dixon's 5.032. Left Lane: Rhonda Hartman Runs 13.450/ 75.21 (14.236/ 66.53) Now #22 (#22) Right Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 4.759/296.15 ( 4.740/306.85) Now # 7 (# 7) Both cars are, well... consistent. It's just not the sort of consistency that Virgil Hartman wants for his daughter, the car boiling the hides hard, right off the line. Left Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 4.930/286.98 (11.843/ 77.51) Now #14 (#21) Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr. Runs 4.920/241.54 (11.091/ 77.40) Now #13 (#20) A pair of fours beats a full house, and these two make the show... for now. TJjr's run looked really strong on the bottom end, but the flames really started mixing it up on the top end, and he clicked it way early... right now he has the distinction of being the slowest qualified car, speed-wise. That's the last pair of the round, so it's time for more Funny Cars... 5:18 PM -- Ed Dykes / Racing Information Systems![]()

Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 5.032/303.74 ( 5.060/290.04) Now # 3 (# 4) Right Lane: Tom Hoover Runs 5.180/279.58 (13.586/ 69.63) Now # 8 (#16) Skuza just keeps clicking 'em off, smooth and clean... And Hoover steps up, leaving just Neely, Bolger, and Baldwin still outside the show. Left Lane: Ray Higley Runs 5.398/204.59 (No prior time) Now #13 Right Lane: Chuck Etchells Runs 5.137/285.98 ( 5.574/217.65) Now # 7 (#13) OK, add Higley to that list... he hadn't run, so I didn't have him on my DNQ list. No matter, he's in the Big Show now, a 5.39 plenty good enough right now. Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 9.717/ 90.09 ( 5.422/295.66) Now #14 (#14) Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.141/294.88 ( 5.232/287.53) Now # 8 (#11) Bazemore says, "I'm tired of having potential, I want to realize some of it..." Well, he's still wanting, the car shaking and bouncing to the point that he throws in the towel... Capps is sneaking up on it, this his best "official" run (as in, not at a test session)... Left Lane: Kenji Okazaki Runs 5.048/299.20 ( 9.975/ 85.94) Now # 4 (#17) Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.231/280.81 ( 5.380/285.26) Now #13 (#12) Kenji showed up as Gary Clapshaw in my round 1 report, sorry 'bout that. Can you tell this is my first national event of the year?? Sheesh, lotsa cobwebs. Left Lane: Randy Anderson Runs 5.094/272.31 ( 5.019/290.51) Now # 1 (# 1) Right Lane: Freddie Neely Runs 12.735/ 75.95 (15.466/ 71.50) Now #18 (#18) Anderson dropped a cylinder or two, early... Neely was up in smoke, early... lotta 'early' goin' on, here. Left Lane: Mark Oswald Runs 9.660/ 82.75 ( 6.918/132.70) Now #16 (#16) Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.006/294.69 ( 5.148/299.60) Now # 1 (#10) Big shock there, Force nails down the #1 qualifying spot... Left Lane: Norman Wilding Runs 5.443/272.14 ( 9.489/ 88.60) Now #16 (#17) Right Lane: Bobby Baldwin Runs 10.393/ 77.12 (No prior time) Now #18 Baldwin still can't get the handle, but Wilding barely makes the show and bumps Oswald in the process.... Left Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.072/291.54 ( 5.128/296.54) Now # 7 (# 8) The younger Pedregon moves up just one spot, the engine eating itself up pretty good on the top end... Left Lane: Del Worsham No Time ( 5.195/285.08) Now #12 (#12) Right Lane: Paul Smith Runs 5.245/287.26 (No prior time) Now #14 The final pair here... and another machine comes out of the woodwork to qualify, Smith opting not to make the first session... I guess when you're good, you don't need all those qualifying runs. Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.253/267.06 ( 5.195/285.08) Now #12 (#12) And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is the final run of the day... thanks for watching, sports fans. 5:55 PM -- Ed Dykes / Racing Information Systems![]()

Left Lane: George Weiler Runs 7.979/166.79, Psn # 2 Right Lane: Adam Landolfi Runs 7.569/165.99, Psn # 1 11:44 AM, and it's a great day for the Factory Hot Rods... Dave Schultz just ran 7.321 in Pro Bike, the quickest ever, so we may have some records set today... And one of these two really bogged off the line. Left Lane: Lewis Worden Runs 7.002/196.85, Psn # 1 Right Lane: Bob Benza No Time Benza's not gonna make this round, a huge stream of oil trailing behind the car as he made the turn out of the staging lanes and into the water... A great pass by the part-time team from the Show-Me state, very nearly making the Holley Six-Second Club... they have a Vince Khoury engine in their Cutlass this weekend. Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.564/183.41, Psn # 3 Right Lane: Grant Lewis Runs 7.042/ 0.00, Psn # 2 This is the first appearance in Pro Stock for Lewis... and his speed did not register on this pass. Nice debut, tho... Left Lane: Mark Ingersoll Runs 7.053/197.02, Psn # 4 Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.978/196.93, Psn # 1 And Bruce gets into 'the Club', his first ever six second pass here, by one of the really nice guys in the sport... Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.027/196.54, Psn # 4 Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.959/198.54, Psn # 1 Tom Kling doesn't look happy about something, can't tell what. Left Lane: Larry Davis Runs 7.123/191.69, Psn # 8 Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.962/198.10, Psn # 2 And we get another first-time six, Schmidt joining the pack. That makes thirteen, just a few good seats left. Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.927/199.91, Psn # 1 Right Lane: Frank Iaconio Runs 7.869/128.82, Psn #12 WJ just misses getting into the 200's, running the fastest ever in NHRA competition right here... and that '.92 wasn't chopped liver, either. Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 7.023/196.85, Psn # 7 Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.967/198.50, Psn # 4 Yep, those sixes are cheap here today... Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.091/195.27, Psn #11 Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 14.268/ 57.24, Psn #17 We were just discussing how neat it would be if KJ ran the first 200... he'd have to just keep on driving, right on out the gate. Not this time, the car shook hard immediately off the line. Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.052/194.55, Psn #11 Right Lane: Pete Williams Runs 7.011/195.18, Psn # 7 Williams spun the tires pretty hard... Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.027/196.63, Psn # 9 Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.094/193.71, Psn #15 Both cars were very ugly off the line, lotta fishtailing. Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.046/196.46, Psn #12 Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.073/193.75, Psn #15 Terrible 1.10 60' time for the Geoffrion Dodge... Left Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.008/197.36, Psn # 7 Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.073/196.12, Psn #16 Left Lane: Terry Adams Runs 7.002/196.72, Psn # 7 Right Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 7.086/195.18, Psn #19 Coffman almost crossed the centerline, the car making a hard left right off the line... Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.160/196.20, Psn #24 Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.072/195.52, Psn #17 Krisher trailed a strange brown cloud behind his Firebird, all the way downtrack. Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 6.959/197.75, Psn # 3 Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.016/196.33, Psn #11 Bump is already down to 7.053... make that 7.046, now, after that shot by Pawuk. Wow. Left Lane: Jerry Eckman Runs 6.948/196.80, Psn # 2 Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.979/197.62, Psn # 8 It's official, this is already the quickest Pro Stock field in history... and that's the final pair. The top eight cars are already all in the sixes... Warren Johnson recorded the fastest speed in NHRA history, 199.91 mph, during at national-record-tying 6.927-second pass during the first qualifying session: "When I shifted into 4th gear, I knew it was a good run," said Johnson, who holds the current speed record of 199.15, set in March 1995 in Houston. "The engine was turning almost 9,500 rpm at the finish line, so I knew the speed would be good. It was good, but not good enough." Johnson's pass fell just .09-mph shy of the magic 200-mph barrier, which W.J. broke unofficially during testing earlier this year at Gainesville Raceway. The first driver to record a 200-mph speed at an NHRA national event will win a $25,000 bonus from Speed-Pro. "The e.t. was about what I expected for these conditions," he added. "The tires shook a little at the top of 1st gear, and that probably cost a little time. There's room for one- or two- hundredths improvement." Johnson needs a run this weekend of at least 197.82 mph to back up the pass for a new national record. Asked about the prospect of a 200-mph pass in Saturday's morning session, the always introspective Johnson commented, "I'll be watching The Weather Channel tonight to see what the barometer is doing. We have three possibilities for tomorrow morning: Better, worse, or the same!"![]()

PRO STOCK
Friday's 2nd Session Notes
GAINESVILLE, FL - RIS - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 28th Annual Mac Tools Gatornationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, (best prior elapsed time/speed), position in order following run, & (position in order prior to run): Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.989/197.41 ( 6.959/198.54) Now # 3 (# 3) Right Lane: Mark Ingersoll Runs 7.024/196.80 ( 7.053/197.02) Now #15 (#20) 4:12 PM and even though it's the warmest part of the day, the conditions are really not that much worse than during the early session, according to several of the crew chiefs out there... Yates still has the same engine in that he ran this morning, a Maskin-built piece, according to Jerry Bickel. Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 6.998/197.80 ( 6.962/198.10) Now # 5 (# 5) Right Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.049/196.20 ( 7.027/196.54) Now #17 (#17) Martino rolled the light this morning, that's what Kling was so upset about... and he made a big wiggle at midtrack here, still not what he was looking for. Left Lane: Frank Iaconio Runs 7.056/194.80 ( 7.869/128.82) Now #21 (#31) Right Lane: Larry Davis Runs 21.447/ 35.96 ( 7.123/191.69) Now #28 (#27) Davis launched and shut off... Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 6.984/198.01 ( 6.967/198.50) Now # 6 (# 6) Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.938/199.46 ( 6.927/199.91) Now # 1 (# 1) It's not 200, folks, but it does back up his earlier 199.91mph speed as a new national record... Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.982/197.80 (14.268/ 57.24) Now # 9 (#33) Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 14.046/ 57.33 ( 7.023/196.85) Now #15 (#14) Rickie can't seem to get his new car to 60', especially on hot tracks... but it's not from lack of trying, as he was testing right alongside the rest of the pack at Darlington this week... he ran 6.95 there, but it was late, after the track cooled down. KJ becomes the ninth Pro Stock to run in the sixes this weekend... Left Lane: Pete Williams Runs 7.036/196.20 ( 7.011/195.18) Now #13 (#13) Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.045/196.42 ( 7.091/195.27) Now #20 (#27) Maskin & Co. are optimistic, but Williams fails to improve; the bump spot is 7.024, and Edwards can't reach it. John Kight is here, which isn't news unless you know that he had bypass surgery just last _Tuesday_ ... now it wasn't the major deal where they split open your whole chest, all he's sporting is a 6" scar at the base of his neck. Still serious stuff, tho... Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.100/191.73 ( 7.094/193.71) Now #28 (#28) Right Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.061/195.31 ( 7.052/194.55) Now #22 (#22) Morgn had everything go wrong last session, including throwing off the oil pump belt and spinning a bearing because of it... he spun the tires pretty hard this morning, too. And this pass isn't any better. Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.012/197.28 ( 7.073/193.75) Now #14 (#26) Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.052/197.06 ( 7.027/196.63) Now #18 (#17) Geoffrion rolled the lights this morning, a 1.10 60' the result... then he broke a rocker arm adjuster downtrack. Here, he improved to a 1.07 in 60', and it translates into a run that's good enough to make the show, bumping Mark Ingersoll. Scott told us that the car ought to run in the sixes this lap, but it's still not quite there. Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 8.547/113.29 ( 7.073/196.12) Now #26 (#26) Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.047/196.33 ( 7.046/196.46) Now #22 (#22) Johnson is still running the Mopar B-1 heads, here, so far... but they're likely to try the Eicke heads at some point this weekend. Left Lane: Danny Coffman Runs 7.065/195.27 ( 7.086/195.18) Now #25 (#27) Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 12.368/ 69.69 ( 7.008/197.36) Now #12 (#12) Right off the line, Franks was headed right toward the wall, forcing him to abort or lose paint... Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 10.727/ 83.19 ( 7.072/195.52) Now #26 (#26) Right Lane: Terry Adams Runs 7.094/196.20 ( 7.002/196.72) Now #11 (#11) Couldn't see what caused Krisher to abort... Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.019/196.59 ( 7.016/196.33) Now #15 (#15) Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.987/126.06 ( 7.160/196.20) Now #30 (#30) Gaines was all over the lane, almost beyond the point of saving it... but he did. Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 6.982/197.32 ( 6.979/197.62) Now # 8 (# 8) Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 15.152/ 50.85 ( 6.959/197.75) Now # 4 (# 4) Pawuk is running a trick set of tri-Y headers on his Firebird this weekend... and Alderman repeats with what is supposed to be the team's 'slow' engine... Geoffrion says there's only 6-8 horsepower difference, tho. Left Lane: Adam Landolfi Runs 7.171/193.13 ( 7.569/165.99) Now #31 (#32) Right Lane: Jerry Eckman Runs 6.993/196.37 ( 6.948/196.80) Now # 2 (# 2) Eckman's big advantage is the fact that he always seems to do well off the line... that was a nice 1.04 60' lap. Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 7.133/192.92 (No prior time) Now #30 Right Lane: George Weiler Runs 7.852/166.14 ( 7.979/166.79) Now #34 (#33) Big fun on the top end, as George Weiler's Smarty Pants machine got crossed up after the finishline, possibly from a broken parachute line. Whatever it was, it turned him around and bounced him off at least the right wall, the car getting way up on it's side. We think he stayed off the left side wall, and didn't go over, but the TV monitors aren't working yet and we don't get the benefit of a replay. The Safety Safari is is on the scene immediately, and Weiler is apparently OK, but the nose of the car is quite a bit shorter now... Left Lane: Grant Lewis Runs 7.108/194.80 ( 7.042/ 0.00) Now #20 (#20) Right Lane: Lewis Worden Runs 7.038/196.37 ( 7.002/196.85) Now #10 (#10) Bump spot is 7.023... and there's no joy here. Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.014/196.33 ( 6.978/196.93) Now # 7 (# 7) The final car of the round... and we're done, with 15 six-second run already in the record books. 4:44 PM -- Ed Dykes / Racing Information Systems![]()
