Cory McClenathan accomplished what only Joe Amato had when he completed a sweep of the Western swing with a Top Fuel victory at the Northwest Nationals, where nearly 80,000 fans enjoyed four days of beautiful sunny weather and some of the closest racing of the season.
McClenathan, winner of the two previous races, remained undefeated in his new Murf McKinney car with a holeshot win over Gary Scelzi's Team Winston entry, 4.73 to 4.71. McClenathan also set low e.t. and top speed of the meet with a 4.64, 313.91 blast in round one.
Whit Bazemore continued to apply the pressure to Funny Car points leader John Force with his third win of the season. The Team Winston driver slowed from his earlier 5.0 pace to a 5.29 in the final but picked up the victory when Force's Castrol GTX teammate, Tony Pedregon, smoked the tires in the final. Ron Capps continued his string of strong performances by qualifying Don Prudhomme's Copenhagen Camaro on the pole with a 5.04, but he was upset in round one by Al Hofmann.
Mike Edwards, the 1996 NHRA Winston co-Rookie of the Year, made an emotional return to the winner's circle in Pro Stock with a win he dedicated to his car owner, John Kight, who was home recovering from a stroke. Edwards, winless through the season's first 13 races after three victories in 1996, prevented Jim Yates from sweeping the three-race Western swing by less than a thousandth of a second when he drove Kight's Pontiac to a 7.08 to 7.08 victory, though Yates' runner-up, coupled with Warren Johnson's loss in the semifinals, increased Yates' lead in the Winston points battle.
