SONOMA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in
Funny Car at the 12th Annual Autolite Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Del Worsham (Firebird-BAE) 0.520 5.131 299.93
(L) Scotty Cannon (Firebird-KB) 0.559 8.799 84.21
11:48 AM In top Fuel, the left lane was generally best. Let's see how
it works in Funny Car.
So much for lane choice, Cannon strikes the tires immediately right off the
line. Worsham has a clean run to the lights and then has a small fire.
Worsham has the Winston "No Bull" pick for this race.
(W) Tony Pedregon (Mustang-TFX) 0.539 5.076 280.31
(L) Dale Creasy Jr. (Firebird-TFX) 0.539 5.149 291.70
12:00 PM and we are back to racing after the top end clean up. Tony
and
Dale run side by side to mid track and then Pedregon pulls ahead to win.
He'll have lane choice against Worsham in the next round.
(W) Whit Bazemore (Camaro-KB) 0.554 4.979 306.05
(L) Cruz Pedregon (Firebird-BAE) 0.509 5.236 277.77
Pedregon leads the pair from the line, but slows on the top end.
Bazemore shows why he was the number one qualifier and makes a straight and
clean run.
(W) Chuck Beal (Avenger-KB) 0.549 5.294 253.28
(L) John Force (Mustang-TFX) 0.535 5.516 268.71
Oh my !!! Beal and Force leave together. Beal takes the lead as John
smokes the tires after the cement, but Beal starts to mix up the cylinders.
Beals runs to about 1000ft. and blows the body off the car. Part of the body
looks to have fouled the steering and he crosses over into Force's lane
after
the finish line. They are in a braking contest and Beal bangs the left guard
rail and Force can't get completely away from him. They slide to a stop
together and both drivers are OK. The same can't be said of the two cars!
Beal's FC has both frontend damage, no body, and a blown engine. Force is
more fortunate. His FC looks, in the monitor, to have at least body
damage.
(W) Cory Lee (Avenger-KB) 0.418 5.109 301.20
(L) Tommy Johnson Jr. (Firebird-KB) 0.546 5.050 300.13
A big upset as Cory Lee gets a Super Comp light and is never headed. A
real candidate for the cool move award
(W) Jerry Toliver (Mustang-TFX) 0.550 5.084 305.01
(L) Gary Densham (Firebird-KB) 0.487 7.228 116.03
(W) Frank Pedregon (Firebird-KB) 0.511 5.101 288.83
(L) Al Hofmann (Firebird-KB) 0.526 5.147 281.95
Frank Pedregon has a slight starting line advantage. Hofman pulls back
up, but can't get by. Pedregon will have a single in the next round as Beal
won't be able to return.
(W) Dean Skuza (Avenger-KB) 0.525 5.091 304.53
(L) Ron Capps (Camaro-KB) 0.493 5.678 219.19
Capps leads them down the track and then is up in smoke before
mid-track. Skuza has a great run to match his qualifing number. However,
Bazemore's 4.979 will give him lane choice in the next round.
