Results for Qualifying 3

SONOMA, Calif. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Funny
Car at the 12th Annual Autolite Nationals listing lane, driver na
d, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 10.210/82.83, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.092/292.33, Was #5
Right Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.132/292.65, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.472/271.52, Was #13
Hofmann goes from the bottom half to having lane choice if the pairings stay this way. Skuza has an in car camera points at his hands and face. It's very easy to see what happens to a driver that experiences tire shake, as Skuza just did. Doesn't look like a whole bunch of fun.
Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.021/299.66, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.153/189.47, Was #16
Right Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.169/297.42, Now #10
Best prior run: 8.104/100.36, Was #19
Well, Cannon doesn't have to worry about being on the bump any more. It's hard to describe a Funny Car run that have ANY problems, and that's what Cannon just had. Worsham has to be feeling a bit better right now as he went from the outside to the inside in a real hurry.
Left Lane: John Force Runs 4.949/307.86, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.000/299.00, Was #1
Right Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 4.931/305.77, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.002/304.94, Was #2
We just lost the monitor so this is real fun. Can't see the scoreboard and can't see the track. Oh boy it's on the TV! What a great pair of runs. Bazemore moves around Force and takes the top spot. New track records.
Left Lane: Frank Pedregon Runs 5.043/295.01, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.098/295.92, Was #7
Right Lane: Tony Pedregon Runs 5.229/271.84, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.003/307.65, Was #3
The top half of this field is really tough. Frank picks up a nickel and only gets one spot. Tony appeared to have an engine that was eating it's self at the top end.
Left Lane: Cory Lee Runs 6.601/143.67, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.457/119.63, Was #19
Right Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 5.638/207.78, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.252/271.52, Was #12
Lee was very loose and almost collects the centerline and then the guardrail. Cruz was in and out of the throttle.-
Left Lane: Jerry Toliver Runs 5.281/251.91, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.127/297.75, Was #8
Right Lane: Jim Epler Runs 5.098/272.94, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.443/223.47, Was #15
Oh ouch! Epler has got to be wondering what he has to do to get a good break. Last week he burns the body off the car and this week he suffers a blower explosion that turns the Corvette into a roadster. The entire back half of the body just disappears in a shower of carbon fiber and fire. Very strange explosion as usually the body comes completely off. This time the body was still there from the firewall forward. While all of this was going on in the other lane Toliver was just motoring down the middle of the lane on what looked like a raceday type run, very safe and clean.
Left Lane: Gary Densham Runs 10.080/106.42, Now #15
Best prior run: 5.377/231.87, Was #15
Right Lane: Ron Capps Runs 5.045/285.29, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.176/284.09, Was #12
Capps gets what he wanted on a clean and dry pass. He moves into the top half of the field. Densham smokes the tires and remains in the #15 hole.
Left Lane: Al Segrini Runs 5.928/178.33, Now #17
Best prior run: 5.727/243.28, Was #17
Right Lane: Chuck Beal Runs 5.251/272.12, Now #13
Best prior run: 5.566/205.54, Was #16
Beal gets off the bubble and moves to the 13th spot. Segrini, in Steve Plueger's development car, has one more chance to try and make the field.
Left Lane: Don Sosenka Runs 12.220/77.81, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.495/158.76, Was #18
Right Lane: Mitch McDowell Runs 7.601/123.23, Now #20
Best prior run: 8.107/99.94, Was #20
Neither of these cars is qualified after Friday so they are down to their last two shots. Big hole in the body where the burst panel used to be on the McDowell car. There was a big bang at half track and he's coasting. Sosenka has a tire smoker in the other lane.
Right Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 5.435/196.27, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.027/307.09, Was #5
Johnson gets a .903 sixty foot number and the car runs hard to half track. The engine starts to mix cylinders so he shuts off in a cloud of smoke. This was the last car of the morning Pro session. We'll be back around 5:00 PM PDT for the final round of qualifying.

Best prior run: 6.601/143.67, Was #19
With the track conditions, these are two good runs. Lee's team is happy to see the numbers that move him into the field in the number 11 position.
Left Lane: Cruz Pedregon Runs 10.064/76.28, Now #14

Cruz lifts after the 330. Toliver moves to the top of the field with both ET and MPH improvements.
Left Lane: Al Hofmann Runs 5.113/292.14, Now #10
Best prior run: 5.132/292.65, Was #10
Right Lane: Dean Skuza Runs 9.259/91.14, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.092/292.33, Was #9
Hofmann has a great run, but retains the 10th spot. Skuza leaves well and is another racer to go up in smoke.
Left Lane: Del Worsham Runs 5.154/297.09, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.169/297.42, Was #12
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon No Time, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.021/299.66, Was #4
Cannon hits the hammer and breaks his toy. The car moves hard for about 10 feet and is quiet. Worsham improves in the tough conditions by one spot.
Left Lane: Whit Bazemore Runs 5.176/233.88, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.931/305.77, Was #1
Right Lane: John Force Runs 5.000/295.14, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.949/307.86, Was #2
Our number one and two qualifiers are next. We have a great "race" for the first half of the track. Force shows his consistency and Bazemore slows a little on the top end.
Left Lane: Tommy Johnson Jr.Runs 4.989/306.33, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.027/307.09, Was #6
Johnson shows that he is ready for tomorrows eliminations. He mixes up the cylinders, but stays clean for the number 3 spot.
Right Lane: Peter Russo Runs 5.657/208.23, Now #18
Best prior run: 11.235/72.23, Was #21
Russo has a great start and speeds down the track. He starts to drift toward the guard rail and has to lift. Although 18th, he is almost a first time qualifier.
Left Lane: Ron Capps Runs 8.731/91.06, Now
#8 Best prior run: 5.045/285.29, Was #8
Right Lane: Dale Creasy Jr. Runs 5.163/289.88, Now #12
Best prior run: 5.375/280.14, Was #16
Creasy moves well off the bubble in the "MAD" car. Capps clicks it early. I can't see why on the monitor. Epler's on the bubble with a 5.281. However, they will be struggling to get a body together after destroying new Corvettes in the last two week s.
Right Lane: Gary Densham Runs 5.141/297.02, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.377/231.87, Was #17
Gary will need to pick up almost a tenth to get into the field. He gets tat and then some. A great looking pass into the number 11 position, bumping Epler. Looks like he'll have time to regroup for the next race.
Right Lane: Al Segrini Runs 9.735/80.61, Now #19
Best prior run: 5.727/243.28, Was #19
Segrini is the last one to make an attempt. He leaves well, but has to shut it down. Pro Stock is up next. Cruz Pedregon retains the last qualified position.
